Spotted in the Supermarket

You can easily make an afternoon of checking out some of the larger grocery stores in Tokyo. This one was in the basement of Isetan department store in Shinjuku.

The Perfect Combination

Together at last and available as a gift set — a 4 liter plastic bottle of whiskey and a box of some kind of giant Mickey Mouse Pocky. Spotted and witnessed purchase of by middle-aged man in a liquor store near Toritsu Daigaku.

Hinabe (火鍋)

Had this delicious hinabe (that’s the Japanese translation from Chinese, though… I guess in English it would be called Sichuan hot pot?) Saturday night. Even though it was just in a chain restaurant, it was extremely good.  Hot pot meals are right up there with yakiniku (Japanese name again, this time for Korean barbecue) for me as far enjoyable dining experiences go. We stayed for over three hours eating and drinking.  That’s just the nature of having to cook bite-sized pieces of food in boiling water before eating them.  It goes well with beer.
